On October 12, 2007 many headlines announced that pediatric cold medicines have been taken off the shelves for children under two years of age. But what is a parent to do? Fortunately there are many ways to help a child in distress. Grandma was right about organic chicken soup, increased fluids and steam. But what else can we do? Osteopathic manipulation became well known during a flu epidemic of 1917 when it was noted that patients treated by osteopathic physicians had a faster recovery time. Many illnesses such as colds, flu, pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma are marked by a stagnation of fluids in the body. With gentle osteopathic manipulative such as rib raising techniques and lymphatic drainage techniques, the inherent healing power of the body is released. A. T. Still, MD, the founder of modern day osteopathy, called fever “a natural and powerful remedy”. While fever must be evaluated and sometimes treated in children, it is a sign the body is doing its’ job fighting illness. Help the body along with plenty of fluids, saline nose drops and natural medicines suggested by a knowledgeable doctor. Many children as young as two who have experienced osteopathic manipulative treatment will verbally request treatment when they are ill. Gentle osteopathic treatment is wonderful for babies too. Although it is common for children to have 10-12 colds or illnesses a year, this should not be the norm. Over my years in practice, I have found that children who are on good diet and receive osteopathic and integrative care have far fewer illnesses. Reducing sugary foods and increasing fresh fruits and vegetables is a good step to reducing illness. Sugar paralyzes the white blood cells (some of our immune soldiers) for 4-6 hours which is why there are more illnesses around sugary holidays.
